How To Get American Netflix From Anywhere In The World
I can’t say that I’m surprised since Netflix might be one of the best websites every invented (sorry Facebook).
The only people I know that don’t like Netflix either owned shares in Blockbuster or their own video store.
For those of you who don’t know, Netflix is a website that allows you to stream, or in other words, instantly watch movies and your favorite TV shows that they have in their vast library.
The problem for you, or anyone else who live outside of the USA is that all Netflix libraries are not created equally.
For example, when Netflix finally launched it’s service in Canada they offered Canadians around 7,500 different titles while their neighbours south of the border, in the USA, were able to watch somewhere around 20,000 different shows. Talk about a massive difference!
I actually was a very early adopter of Netflix when I started with their DVD in the mail service back in 2003 and was paying around $21/month at the time. These days Netflix is incredibly reasonable at less than $8/month. It’s an incredible value when you consider that the entire month is less than a single movie at most theaters and about the same cost as renting two movies from iTunes.
Since you’re probably well away of the fact that Netflix outside the USA is a stripped down version of what is offered to computers residing in the USA you probably want to learn how to get American Netflix.
In this guide we’ll show you a bunch of different ways that you can access US Netflix outside the USA. Here goes:
On Which Device Do You Want To Know How To Get American Netflix?
The Guide On How To Get American Netflix on Your iPhone, iPad or iPod Outside Of The USA
One of the simplest, and one of my favorite, ways to access the much larger American Netflix library from outside of the United Sates is from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or other smartphone device.
The beauty of being able to access American version of Netflix on your smart phone or tablet is that you can watch it anywhere! It can make your commute to and from work go by so much quicker, it can make waiting your your flight at the airport enjoyable, you can watch while at your local coffee shop, favorite hang out, outside and even from… well… the bathroom (if you want)!!!
There are a few easy steps to get this all set up and working and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes before you’re watching the much larger US Netflix library from anywhere outside of the States.
Step 1: Download Netflix App
The great thing is that you able to download the Netflix app from most iTunes app stores around the world.
Step 2: Get Yourself The Amazing HMA
HMA‘s an amazing software that I have personally been using for nearly two years now and it works great. From all my testing it is the best solution to virtually reside in another country to get around geographically based blocks that websites use.
The quick technical explanation, if you care, is that HMA re-routes your internet connection through one of the more than 17,000 US-based IP addresses from one of their more than 135 US-based servers.
The non-technical explanation is that it works. Works very well.
HMA can be downloaded and set up and in no time you will be watching the massive US Netflix library in the very chair you’re sitting in right now wherever you are in the world.
You will need to get HMA set up on your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or other smartphone or tablet. Here are the steps to set HMA up an Apple device:
Don’t let these steps discourage you in trying HMA to access US Netflix from outside of the USA. It look like there are a lot of complicated steps since I took a screenshot of each and every step on my iPhone. It is very easy to set up, just follow each step below.
The first 6 steps go like this:
The 6th step is the one that you will need the information from your HMA account to set up the VPN on your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch (or other smart phone or tablet).
Description: This is your chance to come up with massively creative names to your VPN accounts. No wait… that’s a bad idea. This is where I suggest you name the VPN set up a simple name that reminds you which US based server you will be connecting through. For example, if you’re going to connect with an HMA server in New York City I recommend choosing “NYC VPN”. This is simply a descriptive title for the setup and I recommend that you include the city name of where you are setting up the VPN location.
Server: This information is found in the 8th step below. Look for arrow #2.
Account: This information is found in the 8th step below. Look for arrow #1.
Password: This information is found in the 8th step below. Look for arrow #1.
Because I’m not allowed to share these super secret IP addresses, username and password with the world (if I could, I would!) you’ll need to set up your own HMA account and then click on the the option in the navigation menu that says “PPTP servers”.
Unblock Sites Like A Pro: By setting yourself up multiple VPN portals you will be able to choose the closest server to where you currently are in the world on that given day. As an example, if you live in Western Europe you are going to want to set up multiple VPN connections with servers on the East coast of the USA. New York, Philadelphia, Miami, etc. so you can make the most of your HMA experience.
Once Just three more short steps before the fun begins! Confirm that “Proxy” is in the “off” position and then simply activate your VPN but tapping to turn it on. Once your iPhone establishes a connection with HMA it will show you a little blue rectangle on the top right of your screen that says “VPN”.
Step 3: Watch American Netflix on Your iPhone, iPad, iPod From Anywhere Outside of the USA
Now that you’re all set up with HMA, you can enjoy the massive US Netflix library. I find it a little comical (for some reason) that even Netflix tells you that their content is now different since you’re now “in the USA” as you can see in step 14.
Here is just one example of a show that you can’t watch outside of the USA without HMA. The popular program Mythbusters:
After turning on HMA, feast your eyes on this:

Your Computer or Your TV?
The Guide To Watch American Netflix Outside of the USA on Your Computer
Watching the US Netflix library from your computer is another very simple way to gain access to the 3-10 times larger content library.
What makes this an extremely viable option as well is the quality of displays that both desktop monitors and laptop monitors are like today.
I even have a friend who has a 27″ monitor for his computer… which I’m slightly embarrassed to say, until recently, this was how big my TV was.
The simplicity of this method makes it one of the more popular way. Plus, many new computers have HDMI outputs built directly into them so connecting your computer to your HDTV is snap and, just like that, you are watching US Netflix on your TV too! More on that later.
Step 1: You Will Need To Get HMA
In order to access the US Netflix library from anywhere you will need to use a little piece of software with a bit of a naughty name (don’t worry, it’s safe for work). What this software does is re-routes your internet connection through one of their many US-based servers which allows to virtually reside in the USA thus tricking Netflix into thinking you are in the USA which means they will display to you the US Netflix library.
Now, I have been using HMA for nearly two year now and I recommend HMA because I use HMA and I love it. I have even recommended it to my own mother.
Step 2: Go Download The Amazing HMA
Once you have registered with HMA you will want to look for the download software link on the top left of the navigation menu. You will then select which version of the software you’d like to use. I have both a Mac and a PC and it works seamlessly on both (it also works like a charm on my iPhone too :)). Anyways, here is the link you’re looking for:
After you have downloaded HMA you will want to get it set up so it’s optimized for your viewing pleasure. This is very simple and it’s actually only one simple step. When you launch the dashboard you will want to make sure to select the option “Random 10 closes servers based on geographic distance – United States” from the drop down menu. What this will do is allow HMA to compare where you are vs. where their 10 servers in the USA. This will make sure that your connection is optimized and Netflix streams nice and fast.
Step 3: Sit Back and Enjoy The Much Larger American Netflix Library From Outside the US
Now that you’re all set up with HMA, head over and log into your Netflix account. You will be able to see that many title like Mythbusters, Flashpoint, Wilfred, Battlestar Galactica, Limitless and Alphas just to name a few. Here are a few screen shots before and after HMA is turned on:
After HMA is turned on you should be smiling:
Try HMA Risk Free: HMA is so confident in the VPN that they offer they back it with a full 30-day money back guarantee. This means that you can try HMA risk free for 30 days. Give it a try, see how you like being able to access the massive US Netflix library (not to mention Hulu, Pandora and so much more) from outside of the USA. If I was a betting man I’d bet the farm you’re going to love it.
If you’re loving that you can now access the massive US Netflix library from anywhere please and share this page on your social networks! Thanks!

The Many Options To Watch American Netflix on Your HDTV Outside of the USA
With more and more set top boxes like Roku and Apple TV as well as DVD players, gaming devices and the actual TVs themselves being able to connect directly to Netflix you probably want to be able to access the much larger American Netflix content library on that big screen TV of yours from outside of the USA.
The great news is that it’s possible and you actually have many options to get the job done.
Some are easier to set up than other, but rest assured, that all of them shouldn’t be too challenging so pick whichever one suits your and your set up best.
Personally, I use the option where I simple tether my computer to my HDTV since my laptop has a built in HDMI cable. It literally takes 10 seconds to get the picture from my laptop to my big screen HDTV. It’s awesome.
Like I said, review your options and see which one works best for you.
Option 1: Tether Your iPad, iPhone, iPod or other Smartphone or Tablet to The HDTV
Option 1 can be one of the easiest ways to get the US Netflix library on your TV outside of the USA. You can very easily connect your iPad, iPhone or iPad to your HDTV with an adapter. If you have the iPhone 5 you will need the Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. I personally recommend getting the long adapter so you can sit in your favorite seat and control your movie without needed to get up. If yo have the iPhone 4S or older you will need the Apple Adapter which will hook up to the HDMI cable.
In either case I also recommend a long HDMI cable for the same reasons as above. Of course you know your living room better than I do so choose the length of cable that you need for your set up.
When you are finished with the steps from above (link will open in a new tab or window) to set up HMA on your iPhone, iPad or iPod all you’ll have to do is turn HMA on, attach your adapter to the HDMI cable and plug the HDMI cable into your TV.
Then launch the Netflix app and start watching the US Netflix library on your iPhone, iPad or iPad to your hearts content!
You can see that this is going to be one simplest of ways, and requires very littler extra equipment to get the job done. You can even use the HDMI cable that you already own that connects your cable box or DVD payer to the TV since you only need one at a time.
Option 2: Connect Your Computer To The TV
This may be one of the easiest ways to set this up and it all depends on your computer. If your computer, that is either close enough to the TV or a laptop, has an HDMI output you might not even have to buy another piece of equipment to watch US Netflix on your TV from outside of the USA!
So, check your computer… if you have the HDMI output you’re in luck! Just unplug your cable box, DVD player or gaming console and plug that directly into your computer.
Then you will set up and launch HMA using theses steps from above (link opens in a new window), open up netflix.com and choose a movie or show that you want to watch. It will be playing on your HDTV thanks to that HDMI cable that’s connecting your computer and TV!
If you’re not so lucky you’ll have to see what kind of video output your computer has.
If you have one of the newer MacBooks you will simply need one of these: one of these Female Adapter Cable.
If you’re still rocking one of the old school MacBooks this is the adapter you’ll need: one of these Female Video Adapter Cable.
There are lots of other and different kinds of adapters but it will all depend on your computer. Just double check your hardware before buying an adapter. Don’t worry, it’s easy to set up, just make sure you’re investing in the right adapter. Just remember that you can’t access the US Netflix library without the amazing HMA.
If you think this is as sweet as I do and you’re pumped up about now being able to access the much larger US Netflix library please “Like” this page and share it with your friends… thanks!
Option 3: Watch US Netflix on Your TV Using Your iPhone, iPad or iPod and Your Apple TV
The great thing option for those of you that do not want to have a computer hanging around the TV and would prefer to use your Apple TV, PS3, Xbox, Roku, DVD player, etc. that you already have.
That means that everything that connects to your router will be virtually residing in the United States , including your Apple TV, PS3, Roku, DVD player or other set top box. Since your whichever set top box you have will appear to be in the USA you’ll be able to watch the American version of Netflix library from wherever your are in the World.
Here are the steps to set up Option 4:
Step 1: Invest in HMA
Step 2: Invest in a DD-WRT Enabled Wireless Router
HMA recommends the this router, so that is the one I recommend too. You’ll need to get yourself one of these routers, or another DD-WRT enabled router. Check your router before buying a new one… you might already have the DD-WRT capabilities already built in.
Step 3: Set Up Your DD-WRT Router With HMA
Log into your HMA account and click on the “PPTP servers” link on the top left of the page:
Next you’re going to want to make note of the special username & password shown here. Please note that this is not the same as the username & password (big red #1) that you use to log into HMA.
You will also need to pay attention to the PPTP IP Address column (big red #2) as these are the numbers that you’re going to enter into your DD-WRT set up.
Step 4: Time To Configure Your Special Router
Now you will need to set up your special router (or whichever DD-WRT enabled router you get. Here are the steps that you will need to follow to set up your ASUS RT-N16 Wireless-N 300:
4.1. Open up the DD-WRT Control Panel in your router
4.2. Click ” Setup”
4.3. Click “Basic Setup”
4.4. Click “WAN Setup”
4.5. Select Connection Type: PPTP
4.6. Use DHCP: Yes
4.7. Gateway (PPTP Server): Choose one of the IP address from the PPTP servers (big red #2 shown above)
4.8. User Name: use the username and password that is on the PPTP server page at HMA (big red #1 shown above)
4.9. Connection Strategy: Keep Alive: Redial Period – HMA suggests using 999999
4.10. PPTP Encryption: Enable
4.11. Disable Packet Reordering: Enable
4.12. STP: Disable
4.13. Leave everything else as it is
4.14. Save and Apply
Step 5: (The Fun One) Watch American Netflix on Your Apple TV, PS3, Xbox, Roku, DVD Player or Other Set Top Box
With your device of choice virtually residing in the USA while it’s connected to a DD-WRT enabled router you will be surfing through the massive US Netflix library in no time.
Don’t let weird technical terms like “DD-WRT”, “PPTP”, etc. scare you away. If you follow the step-by-step guide above you shouldn’t have any troubles to make this option work.
No option is better than any of the others. I just wanted to make sure I provided you as many options as possible to so you could get US Netflix onto your TV whichever way you wanted to. Like I said before, for me that is option 2 where I simply connect my laptop using the built in HDMI cable to my HDTV.
Now I know that HMA isn’t free… trust me, I wish it was too! Take HMA for a test drive and once you see for yourself how many more titles you get from US Netflix you will see that it’s worth WAAAAYYYYY more than what they charge. Not to mention that you’ll also be able to access Hulu, Pandora, Spotify and many more sites it quickly becomes a no-brainer that HMA is very reasonably priced.
Pro Tip: HMA offers a no-questions-asked-30-day-money-back-guarantee. So, give HMA a 30 day test drive and see for yourself just how powerful it is. If you haven’t already told everyone you know how amazing it is and decide it’s not for you you can simply contact them and request a refund.
